Chapter Twelve

To say that the house was a little chaotic Christmas day would have been a total understatement. Every single room downstairs was filled with family members. The young kids were corralled into the family room where they were entertained with opening gifts, playing games, and watching cartoons.

The adults, having decided to allow the younger kids to enjoy their gifts first, were busy eating and chatting with one another. The noise level had Jacob’s ears ringing, so he took a moment to let his parents’ dogs out back and enjoy the quiet of the snow falling. The two young Lab mix brothers were a handful, but totally lovable. They were far too hyper to be around this many people and had been locked in the laundry room during the party.

Someone else stepped outside shortly after him, and he glanced over to see Ric Derby pulling on his coat and heading his way.

Jacob had been warned, via a text message yesterday, that Rose’s parents knew all about their relationship. It appeared that everyone in Pride knew about them. Here they were, believing they had been keeping it to themselves. He was slightly shocked that everyone around them let them continue to believe it.

“Guess we got that white Christmas everyone was hoping for.” Ric stopped beside him as Snoops, one of his parents’ dogs, came up and sniffed his leg. Ric bent down and scratched the mutt’s fur. “Is this Sneak or Snoop?” he asked him.

“Snoops,” he answered. “Sneak has a little white star on his chest.” He motioned to the other dog, which was currently peeing on the pile of wood.

“Right.” Ric straightened. “Any hint as to what their names mean?”

He shrugged and chuckled. “My parents’ idea of their personalities.” He shook his head then glanced over at the man. “How are Bert and Earnie?”

Ric laughed. “Touché.” He slapped Jacob on the shoulder. “Rose has informed us that you’re getting one of the new homes up at Hidden Cove?”

“Yeah.” He felt his heart skip. He’d prepared for this conversation with the man. The one where Ric asked him his intentions for his daughter. Hell, he didn’t know himself. The only thing that he was certain of was that he wanted to be with Rose.

Ric turned slightly to him. “Which model did you pick out?”

“The Starfish.” He held in a chuckle at the name Rose had chosen for the floorplan.

Ric nodded. “Nice. That was one of my favorites. Course, I always thought it should have a fireplace just inside the back door.”

“Rose added one for me. One of those types that, if we lose power, it doubles as a stove.” He bent down and tossed a stick for Sneak. The dog was a stick-aholic and would play toss for hours or until the person throwing it gave up. “Put a fancy stone fireplace in the main bedroom too.”

He had been so busy entertaining the dog that he hadn’t seen Ric’s reaction as he’d spoken. But now he glanced over at the man, who appeared thoughtful.
